Two kayakers bump the noses of their kayaks ashore and strip and sun themselves. You pass me your binoculars and I take a look, imagine I’m somewhere else. In my ear you whisper a surprise of, “It’s been so long.” And I laugh without truly knowing my laughter. Years later you admit it made you resentful. “They were beautiful,” you say, and I remember them pressing into the sand, into each other, beginners still learning how to hurt.
